“I consider it boyish provocation,” Zeman said of the trip.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis said later on the same debate show he would fight to prevent fallout for Czech companies.

The Czech Republic, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan although Taiwan is a large investor in the country.

Many Czech companies operate in or export to China, the world’s second-largest economy. The richest Czech Petr Kellner’s Home Credit is a major consumer lender in China while the country is also the largest single market for Skoda Auto, the Czech car unit of Volkswagen.

Shares in Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd1114.HKreversed losses and rose as much as 12.3% to HK$7.86 on Wednesday afternoon, their highest since Aug. 17, following the news. The company has a market value of $4.6 billion.

The deal to take it private would be led by state-controlled Liaoning Provincial Transportation Investment Group, which owns 12% of the automaker, the sources said.

The privatisation would attract other Chinese state-backed investors and could kick off as soon as the fourth quarter of the year, said two of the people.

Liaoning’s state asset regulator and Brilliance’s parent, Huachen Automotive Group [LNGOVC.UL], said they had not obtained any relevant information about Liaoning Transportation Investment Group considering leading the deal.

Brilliance, Liaoning Transportation Investment Group and BMW did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The sources declined to be identified as the matter was confidential.

Based in northeastern Liaoning province, Brilliance is 30% owned by Huachen Group, which is majority-owned by the provincial state asset regulator.

The regulator supports the proposal and Liaoning Transportation Investment Group has talked to several banks about financing, said three of the people.

Prospective investors believe Brilliance is undervalued in Hong Kong, the sources said, as the automaker is trading at 3.67 times expected earnings, way below the industry’s median multiple of 14.4, according to Refinitiv data.

Hong Kong’s market has also underperformed major peers so far this year, with the blue-chip Hang Seng Index.HSIdown 16% as of Wednesday, compared with a 14% gain for China’s CSI 300. Brilliance shares have fallen 10% in the same period.

The privatisation would come ahead of BMW buying another 25% to take control of the JV – BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) – for 3.6 billion euros ($4.2 billion) in 2022.

Based on that offer, Brilliance’s current 50% stake in the venture, which contributed to almost all the listed firm’s profit in 2019, would be worth 7.2 billion euros ($8.4 billion), 83% higher than its market value. Its stake will halve to 25% after BMW increases its share.

While the take-private proposal will not impact BMW’s plan to increase its stake in the JV, Brilliance’s valuation is likely to weaken after it loses control of the venture even though it is likely to remain profitable, the sources said.

Hong Kong-listed companies have announced take-private deals worth $17.8 billion so far this year, more than double last year’s annual volume, often citing undervalued shares as a reason. The average premiums paid by buyers for those deals jumped to 46% in 2019 and this year, from 34% in 2018, according to Refinitiv data.

Brilliance also owns 51% of a venture with France’s Renault SARENA.PAmaking vans and sport-utility vehicles, and a stake in an auto-financing firm.

It has yet to be decided if Huachen Group plans to divest its stake in Brilliance, said the people, adding the Liaoning government is planning a major restructuring of the debt-laden group.

Huachen’s debt totalled 133 billion yuan ($19.6 billion) as of the end of June, with short-term borrowings reaching 16.5 billion yuan. Its cash balance was 32.6 billion yuan, versus 37.8 billion yuan at the end of 2019.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – BMW AG and two U.S. subsidiaries agreed Thursday to pay an $18 million (£14.1 million) U.S. fine to resolve accusations that they disclosed misleading information about the German luxury automaker’s retail sales volume in the United States while raising approximately $18 billion from investors in corporate bond offerings.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said from 2015 to 2019, BMW inflated reported U.S. retail sales, which helped BMW close the gap between actual retail sales volume and internal targets and “publicly maintain a leading retail sales position relative to other premium automotive companies.”

It added BMW of North America “maintained a reserve of unreported retail vehicle sales — referred to internally as the ‘bank’ — that it used to meet internal monthly sales targets without regard to when the underlying sales occurred.”

The SEC probe started in late 2019, BMW said.

“There is no allegation or finding in the Order that any BMW entity engaged in intentional misconduct,” BMW said in a statement, adding it “attaches great importance to the correctness of its sales figures and will continue to focus on thorough and consistent sales reporting.”

The SEC said BMW “paid dealers to inaccurately designate vehicles as demonstrators or loaners so that BMW would count them as having been sold to customers when they had not been.”

“BMW misled investors about its U.S. retail sales performance and customer demand for BMW vehicles in the U.S. market while raising capital in the U.S.,” said Stephanie Avakian, the SEC director of the division of enforcement.

In September 2019, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and its U.S. unit agreed to pay $40 million for misleading investors about its monthly sales figures to resolve a separate SEC probe.

They feature unibody construction, so they’re not as capable off-road. While neither firm has suitable underpinnings to build an SUV on,CarSalesbelieves both new models will ride on a modular frame being developed internally, in part to underpin a pickup about as big asthe Ford Ranger.

Kia officials requested a bigger, more rugged SUV earlier in 2020. Damien Meredith, the chief operating officer of the firm’s Australian division,saidhe wants “one or two bigger SUVs.” He also confirmed Kia will launch a Ranger-baiting pickup, which lends credibility to the claim that the platform will also be used to underpin an SUV.

Powertrain specifications are still up in the air. Rear-wheel drive will presumably come standard, and four-wheel drive will be either offered at an extra cost, or made standard on some variants.CarSalesspeculates a two-speed transfer case could be available, and it added the 3.0-liter turbodiesel straight-six developed forthe Genesis GV80will be the base engine in some global markets. It’s reasonable to assume ahybridoption will appear, too.

If the report is accurate, both SUVs could land in 2023, meaning they might be labeled 2024 models in the United States. They’d also be sold in Australia, where motorists have a healthy appetite for off-roaders, in theMiddle East, where theLand Cruiserand theNissan Armadareign supreme, and in Russia. Interestingly, posh spin-offGenesiscould receive its own version of the SUV, much likeLexusgets a specific variant of the Land Cruiser.

In the United States, Kia’s entry into the segment will pick up wherethe short-lived Borregoleft off. It’s still sold in several global markets, where it’s known asthe Mohave. Hyundai has been here before, too. In 1991, it released a Land Cruiser-like off-roader named Galloper that was based on theMitsubishiPajero and offered with two or four doors. While the American market version looks a lot like the variant that will be sold in global markets, the range will include an outdoorsy equipment package named X-Line, offered as the AWD version of SX Prestige model, which adds an inch of ground clearance, specific 20-inch alloy wheels, a bridge-type roof rack, and a handful of rugged-looking exterior accents. It also brings a center locking differential and electronic hill descent control. While it won’t be giving aJeep Grand Cherokeefits, it sounds like it will be more capable over rough terrain than your average familycrossover.

Besides the X-Line’s extra ground clearance (a decent 8.3 inches), every 2021Sorentogains 1.4 inches of wheelbase. Total length remains the same, though, and third-row legroom has actually gone down by2inches. As such, the Sorento maintains its unusual in-betweener position: it’s bigger and has more seats than aHonda CR-VorToyota RAV4, but it isn’t as spacious or cumbersome as bigger three-row crossovers. This positioning makes even more sense now that Kia sellsthe Telluride.

The 2021 Sorento comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and six USB charging ports. Buyers willing and able to move up the trim hierarchy and tick a few boxes on the list of options unlock a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera, eight USB ports, a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, cloud-based navigation, plus multi-connection Bluetooth technology that lets the passengers simultaneously connect two phones. Owners can also use an Amazon Alexa- or Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker to remotely start the engine, among other functions. 

The 2021 Sorento range will ultimately include four powertrains. Entry-level models come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 191 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. The upgrade engine option is now a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter making 281 horsepower and a stout 311 pound-feet of torque. The old Sorento’s V6 is no more. Front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission come standard on both, and all-wheel drive is offered at an extra cost.

The big powertrain news, however, is the addition of twohybridmodels that make the Sorento one of the rare midsize SUVs to offer such a choice. The standard hybrid system teams a turbocharged, 1.6-liter four-cylinder with a 44-kilowatt electric motor fed by a 1.5-kilowatt-hour battery. It sends 227 horsepower to the front wheels (all-wheel drive is not available) via a six-speed automatic transmission, and it helps the Sorento return an estimated 39 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 37 mpg combined. That betters the only other three-row midsize crossover that offers a hybrid powertrain, theToyota Highlander.

Finally,the plug-in hybrid systemKia will release in 2021 is built around the aforementioned 1.6-liter, but it gains a more powerful 66.9-kilowatt motor and a bigger 13.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It sends 261 horsepower to the four wheels via a six-speed automatic, and the firm quotes an electric-only driving range of up to 30 miles.

Some 16 electronic driving aids are available. Adaptive cruise control and forward collision avoidance assist are standard, while blind spot collision avoidance and cyclist detection are offered at an extra cost.

Built in Georgia alongsidethe bigger Tellurideandthe K5 introduced to replace the Optima, the 2021 Kia Sorento will arrive in showrooms nationwide before the end of 2020. Kia will split the lineup into five trim levels called LX, S, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige, respectively. Pricing information will be released in the weeks leading up to its on-sale date. For context, the 2020 model starts at $26,990, and that figure shouldn’t increase dramatically.

The 39-year-old Spaniard, who last raced in F1 with McLaren in 2018, is returning for a third stint with the French manufacturer team.

“It’s going to be a couple of simulator days here at the factory, preparing next year and also helping somehow the weekends this year,” he said of his plans in a video interview issued by Renault.

“I guess I will come to a couple of races, just to follow the team on the track side and to understand the philosophy working on the weekend.

“(The season-ender in) Abu Dhabi will be probably a must, and hopefully I can come to Imola which is close to my home in Switzerland,” he added. “I will be available for the team for anything they need.”

Alonso visited the team’s factory at Enstone in central England for a seat fitting and also travelled to Viry-Chatillon in France to meet Renault technicians.

The Spaniard won his titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and also raced for them in 2008 and 2009 after a difficult season at McLaren.

“A lot of things have changed; the simulator is new, the wind tunnel is updated, a few things are the same: some of the offices, the gym that I used to visit a lot,” he said of Enstone.

“It’s like a first day at school with a lot of hopes, a lot of new things to learn but very productive.”

“I think the team is in good shape for the future. The last three races were encouraging for everyone, for myself as well,” he added.

Renault are fifth in the constructors’ championship.
